Carlson Projects: Your Deck Builders

We had great time this last summer season working on various deck builds. Here are some pictures of our most recent deck project here in Lincoln.

This project was a big under taking with almost 1400 sqft of decking this deck is one of the largest we’ve done before and it turned out great. We added three benches with built in storage and a bar complete with electrical outlets to run blenders and crock pots. The deck surface is all cedar sealed with Australian timber oil.

This small deck was fun because we got to do hidden fasteners. this means there are no screws showing on the deck which really brings out the grain in the wood.

This covered porch and patio was a great full back yard transformation. The construction of this covered porch is completely built out of cedar including the ceiling which is a cedar tongue and groove plank that gives a very seamless and outdoorsy look to it.  It also features a ceiling fan to keep cool on those warm summer days along with outlets to run any portable heaters you may need on the cooler fall mornings and nights.

Why should i buy a new roof?

September 19, 2013 | By | No Comments

Why buy a new roof if my old one isn’t leaking?

We understand this question because when you buy a roof it is not a small commitment, it is normally thousands of dollars and a hard decision to bring yourself to spend that kind of money on a roof. Well here’s a few quick things to help you make the right decision when buying a new roof. To answer that question we really have to observe the roof your talking about.

“Why should i buy a new roof?”

if your roof looks like this, then you are looking one of two things.

why should i buy a new roof

1. You most likely have a warranty issue which can be a good and bad thing. It could be good because you can now receive some money back from the shingle manufacturer. why it could be a band thing is if the previous own did not transfer the warrantee to you. When you buy a new house the warrantee for the shingles has to transfer to the new owner to be able to get money back from the manufacturer.

2. Ventilation can also be a huge contributing factor to this problem. Think of your roof like a boiling pot of hot water with a lid on it once that water started to become hot what showed up on the lid? Condensation did, and the only way to relieve that condensation and steam is to pick up the lid. Your roof is quite similar to this without ventilation, with scorching hot temps in summer your attic becomes a humid hot pot with nowhere for that hot air to escape the condensation practically boils your shingles. Without ventilation your shingles begin to curly.

“Why should i buy a new roof?” if your roof look like this heres what is most likely the problem is.

why should i buy a new roof

1. This is most definitely hail damage. If you were already had a leaky roof then your are luck you will get money back from your home insurance company and that leak will be solved. Either way you should receive insurance money for this.

Lastly if your roof is showing just minor wear like this without any leaks. This means your critical areas such as, valleys, any pipes, and flashings are worn considerably more. This is where leaks will begin to show up you can save those headaches by either having a roofing expert come out and inspect your roof for free or get an estimate for the entire roof and save yourself the pain of having to deal with leaks that won’t go away.

How to install a roof vent, on a new roof or preexisting roof.

September 3, 2013 | By | No Comments

Have you ever been up on a roof wondering how in the world are those vents installed? have you been scratching your head on how to install a new roof vent on your home? We have the solution, here is a quick how to video on how to install a roof vent and how not to install a roof vent hope you enjoy it. If you have any questions feel free to go to our contact us page. There are also many various types of venting options these are only one of the many options that can be explored. The other option we like to add to our customers roof is something called ridge vent. Ridge vent is not new to the roof ventilation world but it has become more and more recognized and the best way to vent your attic and keep your utility costs down. you can check out all those options on our ventilation page.

Also another great resource that has a very good article on roof ventilation is Finehomebuilding.com

heres the link to that article that talk about the right ways ventilation is to be done and also the wrongs ways. This article talks about airflow not only for your roof but for your attic. Also on how you can keep you monthly utility bills down by adding more ventilation.

http://www.finehomebuilding.com/how-to/articles/a-crash-course-in-roof-venting.aspx?

Here’s a little of what they had to say “I have learned here (building science articles here on this web site by Joe Lstiburek) that in her case ridge vents are unnecessary and actually detrimental to cooling the attic space/roof when you already have gable and soffit vents, something to do with gable vents overpowering the vented soffits,” Pizza writes in a post at Fine Homebuilding’s Breaktime forum.

I’ve have been blessed enough to be taught and brought up by someone who has been in the business for over 20+ years and its always so cool to see how far Carlson Projects has come since then.

before and after deck pictures

Here are a few before and after deck pictures of a recent deck we refinished.

We started by stripping the deck with Behr wood stripper, it did the job perfectly we then power washed and sanded a few high spots. The next day after allowing the deck to dry we began with the first coat then let that dry and yesterday we put the final coat of Behr deck and siding stain this deck.

The before and after looks pretty incredible, We love transformations like this!
