Why does my roof leak during the winter?

Why does my Roof leak during the winter?

Oh the Holidays. The Carols, the Lights The eggnog and Cheer.  The dark circles that suddenly appear, on your ceiling. It hasn’t rained for a while and not to much snow. So what are these Phantom circles you ask? Good Question.

Here are the most common causes of the winter question of “why does my roof leak in winter?”. These are in no particular order.

1.Roof Vents designed without a filter can let a fine wind driven snow to blow in. This piles up in the attic while it remains cold, but after it warms up outside to above freezing the snow begins to melt and can start to drip and stain the ceiling. The snow once melted will go away and it may be several years before these conditions occur again. Simple solution, the hardware stores sell a commercial filter that will come in a roll, Usually Blue and about 1″ thick. This can be cut with a scissors and friction fit into bottom of the vent or if you can around the up right portion of the vent. The filter blocks the snow but allows the air to flow freely.

2. Condensation on pipes that vent through the attic. Heating or furnace pipes are warm and carry warm moist air right up the pipe. The warm air rises and collects on the cap and then runs back sometimes into the double wall pipe. The water is trapped within the double wall until it finds a escape. Most usually at a bend  in the pipe or elbow. The water then drips into attic and onto the ceiling. One solution My heating and air friend use’s is , Remove the cap and seal the top of the double wall pipe with a high heat silicone or Urethane sealant then re-install the cap. The sealant keeps the water from getting into the pipe, simple solution.

3. Are your bath fan vents Insulated and through
the roof? Same as number 1. the bath vent transfers warm moist heated air into
the attic. This can cause several problems. Too much moisture in the attic can
cause the roof sheeting to swell and buckle, this is an expensive fix. Moist
attic combined with poor ventilation can cause mold build up. This can be a
health problem as well. Simple solution, make sure vents extend through the
roof and have a backflow flap on the vent. The pipe should be insulated to keep
from condensation. Make sure the attic is properly

Ice Dams are formed when the temperature outside, warms above freezing during the day and melts snow and re-freezes overnight. This occurs on the cool part of the eave or the non heated surface of the roof. Then this cycle of thaw and re-freeze continues until the ice forms so thick that it causes water to dam and run backward underneath shingles.

Get your roof ready for winter in the midwest?

September 24, 2013 | By | No Comments

Top 4 things to get your roof ready for winter.

Winter is just around the corner, and in the midwest this time of year is critical to having your roof not leak. Don’t let your roof look like this.

Get your roof ready for winter

1. Make sure all your flashing are in good condition.

This can be a huge problem when it comes to winter, if you do not have proper flashings around pipes and chimneys where snow and ice will collect you will have a leak regardless the circumstances. this is a picture of a pipe that has no flashing around it to shed the water, this is basically like putting a funnel on top of your home. This is not what you want on your roof here is what it should look like with a proper lead flashing.

2. Clean your gutters, this seems like a very small thing in comparison to the whole roof but if your gutters are full of leafs and branches it will cause a big problem. When the snow melts and begins refreezing this will create a dam in your gutters which could lead to a whole number of things.

3. Have an inspection of your whole roof done, we can do this at minimal cost and it can save you from a whole bunch of headaches through the winter. If we find something that needs to be addressed you will be presented with photos of the problem then, we will walk you through how we propose to repair it the best way and most cost effective for you.

4. Check your shingles. This may seem like an obvious thing but when we look at shingles we view them in a different way then the way most people do. We examine look, texture, and durability, we also check for hail or tree branch damage as we walk around a roof.

Are you ever on pinterest? Well we are and apparently our customers are as well. This customer came to us with a picture and idea from, We searched the whole world wide web for plans of this pin but, couldn’t find any so here is our plan and hopefully we can help some future DIY-ers avoid some headaches before they try building outdoor furniture like this. This is the part of Carlson “Projects” that doesn’t fit into roofing and remodeling but we love doing projects like this. if you have an idea for a outdoor furniture, a deck, or saw an idea on pinterest thats out of your own capabilities, don’t hesitate to call us at 402-402-5808. Also if anything is highlighted it is clickable and will take you directly to where you can buy these products.

Here’s how it all started. Everything was built out of cedar and the laths were out of miratec concrete siding. Its all held together by 1/2″, 3/8″ lag bolts, 3″ galvanized torcs head screw, and finish nails.

All measurements were and concrete footing were dug and poured. Anything on concrete was held down by a 4×4 post brackets with 1/2″ sleeve anchors through the existing patio.

Once framing was up it was time to start working seat back framing.

The spacing on the laths were very scientific.. not really we made sure the top was level then started with the width of the level twice then cut two 2″ wide pieces of 1×1 and used those for our templates and alternated accordingly.

Then we started to attach the seat back and figured our center seat/miter with a t-bevel gauge. after that was securing everything down and one final touch up coat of paint with Behr exterior paint.

Here are a few before and after deck pictures of a recent deck we refinished.

We started by stripping the deck with Behr wood stripper, it did the job perfectly we then power washed and sanded a few high spots. The next day after allowing the deck to dry we began with the first coat then let that dry and yesterday we put the final coat of Behr deck and siding stain this deck.
